Clement Virgo is one of Canada’s foremost film directors. His first feature film, RUDE, premiered at Cannes 1995 in Un Certain Regard and went on to play other festivals around the world including TIFF, London and Sundance (1996) and was again included at Locarno 2019 as part of the Black Light Retrospective of significant 20th Century Black Cinema. Virgo’s other features include POOR BOY’S GAME (Berlinale, TIFF, Pusan 2007), and LIE WITH ME (TIFF, Pusan 2005, Berlinale 2006), which sold in over 50 countries around the world. Known for his unique POV as a Black filmmaker, he has brought his cinematic approach to notable TV dramas including THE WIRE (for HBO), MONSTER (2022, for Ryan Murphy & NETFLIX), BILLIONS (Showtime) and the OWN drama, GREENLEAF (2016-20), as an Executive Producer alongside Oprah Winfrey. In 2015, Virgo directed and wrote a limited series adaptation of Lawrence Hill’s THE BOOK OF NEGROES which was nominated for 2 Critics Choice Awards and the Peabody Award. His current feature film BROTHER, based on the novel by David Chariandy, will be having its world premiere at TIFF this year.
